# What is a virtual number?

In everyday use, a virtual number is any phone number you use without a dedicated SIM card for it in your own phone. You reach it through an app, a website or a dashboard. That covers second-line calling apps, numbers that forward to your real phone and the temporary numbers people use to receive one verification code. This page explains the types, how they work and where they fall short.

## What is a virtual number?

A virtual number is a real phone number in the global numbering plan that you use through an app or website instead of a SIM card in your phone. It can be an internet calling line, a forwarding number or a temporary number for SMS verification. Calls and texts reach you online, from any device.

## What does virtual number mean?

The word virtual describes how you access the number, not whether it exists. A virtual number is still an ordinary number in the international numbering plan the ITU defines in Recommendation E.164 (2010), with a country code and a national number. People can call or text it like any other. What is different is that no SIM card for that number sits in your phone.

Instead, the number lives with a provider. When a message arrives, the provider shows it in an app or a web page, or forwards it somewhere else. That is why you can use a virtual number on a laptop, a tablet or a second phone, and why it can be set up in minutes without visiting a store.

## What are the main types of virtual numbers?

Consumers meet four kinds. They behave differently with apps that send verification codes, so it helps to know which one you have.

| Type | How you use it | Typical lifetime | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Second-line app number | Calls and texts in an app over the internet | As long as you keep the account | A separate number for calls and messages |
| Forwarding number | Calls or texts forwarded to your real phone | Months or years | Giving out a number without revealing yours |
| Rental number | Messages shown in a dashboard for a set period | Days to months | Receiving texts for a project or a trip |
| Temporary verification number | One SMS code shown in your browser | Minutes | Confirming a new account once |

## How does a virtual number work?

Every virtual number is connected to a network somewhere. Some run over the internet, which makes them VoIP numbers (see /glossary/voip-number). Others are mobile lines held by the provider in SIM banks or delivered through carrier partners, and the provider passes the messages on to you. Either way, the sender's SMS reaches the number like any other text, and the provider's software shows it to you.

This is also why apps treat virtual numbers differently. Many services check the line type before sending a code and may refuse internet-based numbers. The difference between those categories is explained in /glossary/non-voip-number.

## What are the limits of a virtual number?

A virtual number is only as reliable as your access to it. If you stop paying for a rental or a temporary number expires, the number goes back to the provider and may later be assigned to someone else. Any account that still uses it for login codes or recovery is then exposed.

Text-based scams also target virtual numbers. The FTC's 2021 alert on the Google Voice verification code scam describes strangers who ask you to read back a code so they can open a virtual number in your name. Never share a code you did not request.

- Some apps reject internet-based numbers at sign-up.
- Short-code texts from banks or US services may not reach every virtual number (see /glossary/short-code).
- A number you no longer control should never remain your recovery phone.

## Can I use a virtual number for SMS verification?

Yes, for a one-time check on an account you own. TempSMSVerify gives you a temporary number in 140+ countries, reserved for up to 20 minutes. The code appears in your browser, you are charged only if it arrives, and the amount is refunded automatically if it does not. See /how-it-works for the full flow.

After sign-up, move login security to an authenticator app or passkey, because a temporary number cannot receive future codes once it expires. Our /acceptable-use policy explains what the numbers may be used for.

## FAQ

### Is a virtual number a real phone number?

Yes. A virtual number is a normal number in the international numbering plan, with a country code and a national number, so anyone can call or text it. The only difference is how you access it: through an app, website or dashboard instead of a SIM card for that number in your own phone.

### What is the difference between a virtual number and a SIM number?

A SIM number is tied to the SIM card or eSIM in your phone, and your carrier delivers calls and texts straight to that device. A virtual number is held by a provider that passes calls and messages to you online. You can use it from several devices, but it depends on that provider and your account with it.

### Can someone trace a virtual number?

The provider that issues the number knows which account uses it, and it can be required to share records under the law. A virtual number keeps your personal number private from the app you sign up with, but it does not hide who you are from the provider or the law. Use it to protect your privacy, never to hide wrongdoing.

### Why do some apps reject virtual numbers?

Many apps check the line type before sending a code. Internet-based VoIP numbers are easy to create in bulk, so some services block them to limit spam and fake accounts. Numbers that look like mobile lines are refused less often, but each app sets its own rules, and those rules change without notice.

### Do virtual numbers receive SMS from any country?

Usually, for normal long numbers. A virtual number receives texts sent from other countries the same way a phone does, as long as the sender's provider routes international SMS. Short codes are the main exception: they work only within their own country and often only on carriers that have enabled them.

### How long does a virtual number last?

It depends on the type. Second-line app numbers last as long as you keep the account active. Rentals last for the days or months you pay for. A temporary verification number from TempSMSVerify is reserved for up to 20 minutes, which is enough to receive a sign-up code and any retry codes.

### Is it legal to use a virtual number?

In most countries, yes. Virtual numbers are a normal telecom product used by businesses and individuals. What matters is how you use one: follow each app's terms, verify only accounts that are yours and never use any number for fraud, harassment or impersonation. Local rules vary, so check them if you are unsure.
