# Country calling codes: lookup and full list

Source: https://tempsmsverify.com/tools/country-calling-codes · Last updated: 2026-10-24

Every ITU-assigned country calling code in one table: 243 countries and territories with their ISO 3166 code, flag and dial code. Search by country name, by ISO code or by typing the code itself, and sort any column.

## How do I find which country a calling code belongs to?

Type the code into the search box, with or without the plus sign. +44 is the United Kingdom, +1 covers the United States, Canada and most of the Caribbean, +7 is Russia and Kazakhstan, +91 is India and +49 is Germany. Codes are one to three digits; +1 territories add a three-digit area code.

## How country calling codes work

A country calling code is the one-to-three digit prefix that routes an international call or SMS to the right country. It follows the international prefix you dial to leave your own country (+ on a mobile, 00 in most of the world, 011 from North America). The codes were assigned by the ITU in zones: 1 for North America, 2 for Africa, 3 and 4 for Europe, 5 for Latin America, 6 for Oceania and Southeast Asia, 7 for Russia and Kazakhstan, 8 for East Asia and 9 for South and West Asia.

Codes never overlap: no code is the prefix of another, which is what lets a phone network read +1, +44 or +353 without knowing in advance how long the code is. Within a country the rest of the number follows a national plan, which is why the total length varies between countries even though E.164 caps it at 15 digits.

## Codes shared by several countries

- +1 is the North American Numbering Plan: the United States, Canada and about 25 Caribbean and Pacific territories. The three digits after +1 are an area code, and for territories like Jamaica (+1 876) or Puerto Rico (+1 787, +1 939) the area code is fixed, which is how the table lists them.
- +7 is shared by Russia and Kazakhstan; Kazakh numbers start with +7 6 or +7 7.
- +44 covers the United Kingdom together with Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, which use UK-style area codes.
- +61 is Australia plus Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands; +47 is Norway plus Svalbard; +358 is Finland plus Åland; +39 serves Italy and in practice Vatican City.
- French overseas territories mostly have their own codes (+590, +594, +596, +262, +687, +689), while Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin share +590 with Guadeloupe and Mayotte shares +262 with Réunion.

## Calling codes and SMS verification

When an app asks for your phone number it usually shows a country dropdown and expects the national part only. If the form shows +44 and you type 07911 123456, many apps silently keep the 0 and send the code nowhere. Type 7911 123456 instead, or paste the full E.164 number into our formatter to see what the app should receive. When you rent a temporary number from the catalog, the country code is displayed next to the number so you can select the matching country in the app.

Apps also use the code to decide whether they serve a market at all. Some refuse sign-ups from certain country codes or ask for extra verification; our requirements index notes those cases per app.

## About this list

Names follow the ISO 3166 short English names, with a few common forms kept for readability (Czechia, Eswatini, Côte d'Ivoire). Kosovo appears with its provisional code XK and its calling code +383. The list reflects ITU-T E.164 country code assignments; names follow ISO 3166 short names in English. It was last reviewed on 2026-10-24; corrections are welcome at contact@tempsmsverify.com.

## FAQ

### Which country is +44?

+44 is the United Kingdom. The same code is used by the Crown dependencies Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man, which have their own area codes inside the UK plan. A UK mobile number looks like +44 7xxx xxxxxx.

### Which country is +1?

+1 is the North American Numbering Plan, shared by the United States, Canada and around 25 Caribbean and Pacific territories such as Jamaica (+1 876), the Bahamas (+1 242) and Puerto Rico (+1 787). The three digits after +1 identify the area, so +1 416 is Toronto and +1 212 is Manhattan.

### What is the difference between a country code and an area code?

The country code routes the call to a country (+33 for France). The area or mobile prefix that follows routes it inside the country (6 or 7 for French mobiles). In E.164 both are written as one string without separators: +33612345678.

### Do I dial + or 00 before the country code?

On a mobile phone, + works everywhere and is the safest choice. From a landline you dial your country's international prefix instead: 00 in most of Europe, Asia and Africa, 011 from the United States and Canada, 0011 from Australia. Apps and web forms always expect the + form.

### Why does my country show two or more dial codes elsewhere?

Some lists repeat a country for each of its NANP area codes (the Dominican Republic has +1 809, +1 829 and +1 849). We show one row per country with its primary code; the formatter still recognizes the extra area codes when it detects a country from a full number.

### Can I get a temporary number with a specific country code?

Yes. The catalog lists numbers for 140+ countries with live stock and price; pick the country, then the app, and the number appears with its code. You are charged only when the SMS arrives.
