Best SMS verification services in 2026

There is no single best SMS verification service; there is a best fit for what you need. This comparison sets the criteria first, uses each provider's own public pages as the source, and dates every fact. One disclosure up front: TempSMSVerify is our product, and we buy lines from two of the providers listed, HeroSMS and 5sim. Read the table with that in mind, and check the providers' pages yourself before you top up anywhere.

Quick answer

What is the best SMS verification service in 2026?

It depends on your need. For US-only numbers with rentals, TextVerified fits. For the widest catalogs, 5sim, HeroSMS and SMS-Man list 180+ countries. For pay-on-delivery billing and an SMS-Activate-compatible API, TempSMSVerify (our product) charges only when the code arrives. Compare billing, refunds, countries, API and payments.

How should you compare SMS verification services?

Prices change daily with supply, so a ranking by price is out of date the day it is published. We do not quote prices here. These five criteria decide whether a service will work for you, and they change much less often:

  • Billing model: are you charged when you buy the number, or only when the SMS arrives? This decides who carries the risk of a code that never comes.
  • Refunds: are they automatic, do they return to your balance or to your card, and are there conditions such as cancelling yourself?
  • Countries: how many are offered, and does the one you need have stock today? A big catalog matters less than live stock in your country.
  • API: is there one, and does it follow the SMS-Activate handler_api protocol that many existing tools already speak?
  • Payments: cards, crypto or both, minimum top-up, fees, and whether your balance expires.

How do the main providers compare?

Facts below come from each provider's public website, checked October 23 and 24, 2026. Where a page did not state something, the cell says so instead of guessing. Features such as rentals and voice codes are noted because some readers need them.

Which service is best for which need?

US numbers, area codes, voice codes or long rentals: TextVerified focuses on the United States and offers area code selection, voice verifications and rentals, which TempSMSVerify does not. SMSPool also has rentals, eSIMs and custom area codes.

Rare countries: 5sim, HeroSMS and SMS-Man advertise the largest country lists. If you need one specific uncommon country, the right choice is whichever shows stock for your app in that country today.

Existing SMS-Activate tools: SMS-Activate closed on December 22, 2025, according to the notice on its own site, and its handler_api protocol lives on. TempSMSVerify, SMS-Man and SMSPool all serve an endpoint in that style, and HeroSMS's API docs say tools built for SMS-Activate can switch by replacing the host. Check which actions each one supports before migrating; ours are listed on /api-docs.

Billing risk: if you want nothing spent until a code arrives, look for a model where the price is held, not debited. That is how TempSMSVerify works: the balance is frozen on purchase, charged on SMS and refunded automatically otherwise, with no expiry on the balance.

Where is TempSMSVerify weaker?

An honest comparison has to say this. TempSMSVerify sells one-time SMS verifications only: no rentals, no voice codes, no eSIMs and no area code choice. Our country coverage comes from HeroSMS and 5sim lines, so for a given country a provider with its own supply may have more stock or a different price. The site and support are in English only. If any of those matter, one of the services above may suit you better, and many people keep accounts at two providers.

What red flags should you watch for?

A few warning signs apply to any provider, including us:

  • A site using the SMS-Activate name. SMS-Activate's closure notice says any service presenting itself as SMS-Activate should be treated as a scam.
  • Promises that numbers hide your identity from everyone or will get around bans. Legitimate providers do not sell that, and apps can still refuse any number.
  • No written refund rule, or refunds only on request.
  • Balances that expire after a short period of inactivity; read the rules before you top up a large amount.
  • Public inbox numbers resold as private.

How did we check these facts?

We read each provider's home page, rules or terms, FAQ or knowledge base, and API documentation between October 23 and 24, 2026. We did not test-buy numbers from every provider for this table, so the cells describe what each company states, not delivery rates we measured. Where a page was unavailable or silent, we wrote 'not verified'. If you spot an outdated fact, write to [email protected] and we will correct it with the date.

FAQ

FAQ

What is the most reliable SMS verification service?

Reliability depends on the app and country more than on the brand. The same provider can deliver Telegram codes in one country and fail with WhatsApp in another. Pick a service with automatic refunds, so a failed number costs nothing, and test with a small balance. With TempSMSVerify, you are charged only when the SMS arrives.

Which SMS verification service has the most countries?

On their own sites, checked October 2026, 5sim advertises around 180 countries and HeroSMS 180+, while SMSPool says over 150 and OnlineSIM 110+. TempSMSVerify offers 140+ countries. A large list matters less than live stock for your app in your country, so check the catalog before you top up.

Is TempSMSVerify better than 5sim or SMSPool?

It is different. TempSMSVerify is our product, so weigh our view accordingly. We focus on pay-on-delivery billing and an SMS-Activate-compatible API. 5sim and SMSPool offer larger catalogs and extras such as rentals. Our detailed pages /compare/5sim-alternative and /compare/smspool-alternative list where each one is stronger.

Are there SMS verification services with an SMS-Activate-compatible API?

Yes. As of October 2026, TempSMSVerify, SMS-Man and SMSPool serve a handler_api-style endpoint, and OnlineSIM answers on an undocumented path in that style. HeroSMS's API docs say SMS-Activate tools can switch by replacing the host. Supported actions differ, so confirm the ones your tool uses. Ours are documented on /api-docs.

Do SMS verification services refund failed numbers?

Most reputable ones do, but the rules differ. Some refund automatically when no SMS arrives, some only after you cancel, and some refund to your balance but not to your card. TempSMSVerify freezes the price on purchase and refunds it automatically, in full, if no SMS arrives before the number expires.

Why doesn't this comparison list prices?

Because prices move daily with supply and differ for every app and country, a static price table would mislead you within days. Each provider shows live prices in its catalog. TempSMSVerify publishes a live price index at /temp-number-prices, generated from the same catalog you buy from.

Can I pay for SMS verification with a card?

With several providers, yes. TempSMSVerify accepts Card via Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay); Crypto (USDC or SOL on Solana); card top-ups carry a 10% processing fee and crypto has none. TextVerified and SMSPool list card payments on their sites, while 5sim's support page says cards are temporarily unavailable in most countries. Check before you top up.
