How to create a Gmail account without a phone number
Google's own help center lists the phone number as optional when you create a Google Account, and many people finish sign-up without one. But Google also says that 'sometimes phone verification is required.' This guide shows how to create a Gmail account without a phone number when Google allows it, what to do when it does not, and how to avoid losing the account later.

Quick answer
Can you create a Gmail account without a phone number?
Often, yes. Google's help center (checked October 2026) lists the phone number as optional, so you can tap Skip when it appears. When Google's risk checks want extra proof, it requires a number before continuing. Then you can use a number you control or a temporary number, and set a recovery email you own.
Step by step
- 1
Open the Google sign-up page
Go to accounts.google.com and choose Create account, then For my personal use. Use a normal browser window on a network you usually use.
- 2
Enter your name and birthday
Give your real date of birth. You must meet the minimum age for your country, which is 13 in the United States and most countries.
- 3
Choose your Gmail address
Pick one of the suggested addresses or create your own. If you prefer to keep an existing email, use the option to sign up with your current email address instead.
- 4
Create a strong password
Use a unique password of at least 12 characters, ideally generated and saved by a password manager.
- 5
Skip the phone step if it is offered
If you see a Skip button under the phone field, tap it. If Google shows only Next, it is requiring verification for this sign-up; see the options below.
- 6
Add a recovery email
Enter an email address you control. It is how you will get back into the account if you forget the password or Google asks you to confirm it is you.
- 7
Review and agree
Read the privacy and terms screen, choose your settings and confirm. Your Gmail inbox opens right away.
- 8
Secure the account immediately
In Security settings, create a passkey or add an authenticator app, and save backup codes offline.
Does Google require a phone number for Gmail in 2026?
Not as a fixed rule. The Google Account Help page 'Create a Google Account' (checked October 23, 2026) presents adding and verifying a phone number as an optional step. A separate help page, 'Verify your account,' explains the exception: 'To help protect you and stop spammers, before you create an account or sign in, sometimes phone verification is required to confirm you're a real person.'
Google does not publish the exact triggers, and they change. In practice, the decision is risk-based and made per sign-up. Situations that commonly lead to a mandatory phone step include creating several accounts in a short time, signing up from a network many other sign-ups share (a VPN, a public Wi-Fi, an office), using a browser with unusual settings, or a brand-new device. A first account from a familiar home connection is the case most likely to show Skip.
There is no hidden setting or trick that removes the requirement once Google has decided it wants a number. Clearing cookies or switching browsers sometimes produces a different result simply because the risk check runs again, but you should not count on it.
What are the age requirements for a Google Account?
Google's age requirements page (checked October 2026) sets 13 as the minimum age to manage your own Google Account in the United States and in every country not listed separately. Some countries set it higher: for example, 16 in Germany, Hungary, Poland and Romania, 15 in France, Greece and Serbia, and 14 in Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and South Korea.
Younger children can have an account created and managed by a parent through Family Link. Do not enter a false birthday to get around this. If Google later decides the account belongs to someone under the minimum age, it can disable it until age is verified, and that check may itself require ID or a card.
What can you do when Google insists on a phone number?
If the phone screen has no Skip button, you have four honest options. Each has a different trade-off between privacy and long-term access.
| Option | Privacy | Long-term access | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own mobile number | Google links the number to the account | Best: you can always receive future codes | Your main personal account |
| A number you control but do not publish (second SIM, work line) | Keeps your personal number separate | Good, as long as you keep the line | A secondary account you will keep for years |
| A temporary number from TempSMSVerify | Your personal number is never shared | Only for the initial check; set an email and passkey right after | Passing a one-time sign-up check |
| Sign up with an existing non-Gmail email | No new Gmail address created | Depends on that email account | Using Google services without Gmail |
Can you create a Google Account with your existing email instead?
Yes. Google's help center states that you do not need a Gmail address to create a Google Account and can use a non-Gmail address instead. You get YouTube, Google Drive, Google Play and the rest of the account, just without a new @gmail.com inbox. Google confirms the address by sending a code to that email.
This route does not exempt you from phone checks, which can still appear, but it is a good choice if your goal is a Google login rather than a new mailbox.
How do you use a temporary number for Gmail verification?
If Google requires a number and you do not want to give it your personal one, TempSMSVerify can receive the code. Choose Google in the catalog, pick a country with stock, and copy the number into the Google screen with the matching country flag. Choose text message if Google offers a choice. Google's SMS reads 'G-123456 is your Google verification code'; type the 6 digits.
The number stays reserved for up to 20 minutes. Your balance is frozen on purchase, charged only if the SMS arrives and refunded automatically if it does not. If Google answers 'This phone number cannot be used for verification', no SMS is sent, so you are not charged; cancel after about 2 minutes and try another country. The full flow is on /temp-number/google and /how-it-works.
Google also limits how many accounts a single number can create and how often it can be used for verification, according to its 'Verify your account' page. That is one reason a number may be refused even when it looks fine.
Will Google ask for a phone number later?
It might. Google can show a 'Verify it's you' check at a new login, when you change security settings, or when activity looks unusual. If the only phone on the account is a temporary number, you will not receive that later code. Plan for it on day one:
- Set a recovery email you control, and confirm it.
- Create a passkey on your phone or computer, or add an authenticator app for 2-Step Verification.
- Download and store the backup codes offline.
- Remove the temporary number from the account once your recovery options are in place, or replace it with a number you own.
- Sign in regularly from the same device, which builds a trusted history.
What is allowed and what is not?
Creating a Gmail account for yourself without exposing your personal number is a normal privacy choice. Creating accounts in bulk, getting around a suspension, or impersonating someone breaks Google's Terms of Service and our /acceptable-use policy, and Google can disable accounts it links to that behavior. Keep it to accounts that are yours.
FAQ
FAQ
Why does Google ask me for a phone number but not my friend?
Google decides per sign-up based on risk signals it does not publish. Your network, device, browser and recent sign-up activity all feed into the decision. A shared or VPN connection, several recent accounts, or a new device make a mandatory phone step more likely. Your friend's first account from a home connection may simply look lower risk.
Can I create a Gmail account without a phone number on Android?
Sometimes. The same risk-based rule applies on Android, in a browser and on a computer, so you may or may not see Skip. If the phone setup screen requires a number, you can finish sign-up in a browser at accounts.google.com instead, then add the account to your phone afterward.
Does Google accept temporary or virtual numbers?
Google accepts many numbers and refuses others, including ones it links to heavy reuse or abuse, and it limits how many accounts each number can create. If Google refuses a TempSMSVerify number, no SMS is sent and you are not charged. Cancel after about 2 minutes and try a different country from the catalog.
How many Gmail accounts can one phone number verify?
Google does not publish the number. Its 'Verify your account' help page only says it limits how many accounts each phone number can create and how often a number can be used for verification. If you see 'This phone number has been used too many times', Google suggests using a different number.
What happens if I lose access to the number I used?
Nothing, as long as you set other recovery options. Google uses the phone for some security checks, so if the number is gone you need a recovery email, a passkey, an authenticator app or backup codes to get back in. Set these up the day you create the account, then remove the old number.
Can I add a phone number to Gmail later?
Yes. Open your Google Account, go to Personal info, then Phone, and add or change the number at any time. Adding your own number later is a good idea if you want the most reliable recovery option. You can also remove a number you used only for the initial sign-up.
Is it legal to create a Gmail account without my phone number?
Yes. Choosing not to share your personal number is a legitimate privacy decision, and Google itself treats the phone as optional in many sign-ups. What is not allowed is mass account creation, evading suspensions or impersonation, which break Google's terms and our /acceptable-use policy.
