Telegram without a phone number: what actually works
Telegram is one of the most private mainstream messengers, yet it still asks for a phone number to sign up. If you want Telegram without a phone number, there is no setting that removes the requirement, but there are four legitimate ways to keep your personal number out of the picture. This guide compares them, with the limits of each.

Quick answer
Can you use Telegram without a phone number?
Not entirely: Telegram ties every account to a number. You can still keep your personal number private. Set phone visibility to Nobody and share a username, sign up with a Fragment collectible +888 number, or verify with a temporary number and immediately add a Two-Step Verification password, passkey and login email so you never lose access.
Step by step
- 1
Decide which number to sign up with
Your own number, a Fragment +888 number or a temporary number. The comparison table below shows the trade-offs.
- 2
Receive the login code
Telegram sends a 5-digit code by SMS to a new number, or as a chat message if the number is already logged in elsewhere. Fragment numbers show it in Fragment.
- 3
Hide your number
Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number and set 'Who can see my phone number' to Nobody.
- 4
Set a username
Add a public username in your profile so people can find you by @name instead of by number.
- 5
Lock the account
Turn on Two-Step Verification with a recovery email, create a passkey, and add a login email if Telegram offers it.
Does Telegram require a phone number?
Yes. Telegram's FAQ (checked October 23, 2026) says plainly that 'Telegram accounts can only be connected to a mobile number.' The number is how Telegram identifies the account and delivers the login code when you sign in on a new device.
Two newer features reduce how often you need SMS, but neither removes the number. In December 2025 Telegram added passkeys, which let you log in with Face ID, a fingerprint or a password manager instead of an SMS code; privacy advocates noted at the time that sign-up still requires a phone number. Telegram also asks some accounts to set a login email, after which login codes go to that email instead of arriving by text. You still enter your phone number first.
How do you hide your phone number on Telegram?
If you are fine signing up with your own number but do not want contacts, groups or strangers to see it, Telegram's privacy settings do most of the work. According to Telegram's FAQ, your number is by default visible only to people who already have you in their address book, and you can change that in Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number.
- Who can see my phone number: set it to Nobody.
- Who can find me by my number: once the above is Nobody, set this to My Contacts so strangers cannot look you up by number.
- Username: set a public @username so people can message you without your number. Telegram's FAQ warns that anyone who finds your username can message you, so only set one if that is fine.
- Contact sync: turn off Sync Contacts in Settings > Privacy and Security > Data Settings if you do not want your address book uploaded.
- Groups: in large public groups, members see your name and username, not your number, when visibility is set to Nobody.
What are Telegram +888 numbers from Fragment?
In a blog post dated December 6, 2022, Telegram announced that you can have an account 'without a SIM card' by logging in with blockchain-based numbers sold on Fragment, a marketplace connected to the TON blockchain. Telegram calls them anonymous numbers; Fragment calls them collectible numbers. They all start with the +888 prefix.
These numbers exist only inside Telegram. They cannot receive calls or ordinary texts. When Telegram asks for a code, you connect your TON wallet to Fragment and read the code on Fragment's My Numbers page. Fragment's own help page says direct sales ended in 2022, so today the only way to get one is to buy it from another user on the marketplace, paying in TON. Prices are set by sellers and change with the market.
The trade-off is custody. Whoever holds the number in their wallet controls the login codes. If you lose the wallet's recovery phrase or sell the number, you can lose access to the account. Keep Two-Step Verification on and back up the wallet carefully.
Can you sign up for Telegram with a temporary number?
Yes. A brand-new number has no active Telegram sessions, so Telegram falls back to an SMS, which TempSMSVerify receives and shows in your browser. Choose Telegram in the catalog, pick a country with stock, enter the number in the app and copy the 5-digit code. The number stays reserved for up to 20 minutes, and you pay only if the code arrives; otherwise the amount returns to your balance automatically. Step-by-step details are on /temp-number/telegram.
The limit matters more than the sign-up. After the activation window, the number is released, and you will not be able to receive another SMS on it. If you log out of every device and have no other login method, you could be locked out. That is why the last step in the list above is not optional when you use a temporary number.
| Method | Hides your number from other users | Telegram has your personal number | Main risk | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Own number + privacy settings | Yes, set to Nobody | Yes | Number exposed if Telegram data leaks or a setting is changed | None |
| Fragment +888 number | Yes | No | Losing the TON wallet means losing login codes | Market price in TON |
| Temporary number from TempSMSVerify | Yes | No | Losing access if you log out without a password, passkey or login email | Pay per code; only if it arrives |
| Second number you own | Yes | Only the second number | Paying to keep the second line active | A second plan or SIM |
How do you keep access to a Telegram account without your own number?
Telegram's FAQ explains that once Two-Step Verification is enabled, you need both the code and your password to log in. Combined with a passkey and staying logged in on at least one device, this keeps the account yours long after a temporary number has expired.
- Turn on Two-Step Verification in Settings > Privacy and Security, with a strong password and a recovery email you own.
- Create a passkey in Settings > Privacy and Security > Passkey so you can log in on a new device without an SMS.
- Add a login email if Telegram offers it, so new login codes go to your inbox.
- Stay logged in on at least two devices, such as your phone and Telegram Desktop.
- Check the account self-destruct timer in Settings > Privacy and Security; the account is deleted if you are inactive for the chosen period.
- Never terminate all other sessions unless you are certain you can log back in.
What is responsible use?
Keeping your number private on a messenger is a reasonable choice, especially for journalists, sellers, community admins and anyone who talks to strangers online. Using numbers to run spam networks, evade a Telegram ban or impersonate someone breaks Telegram's Terms of Service and our /acceptable-use policy. Verify only accounts that are yours.
FAQ
FAQ
Can I create a Telegram account with just an email?
No. Telegram requires a phone number at sign-up, and its FAQ states that accounts can only be connected to a mobile number. Some accounts can add a login email afterward, which makes future login codes arrive by email instead of SMS, but you still sign up with a number first.
Do Telegram passkeys remove the need for a phone number?
They remove the need for SMS codes when logging in, not the number itself. Telegram added passkeys in December 2025, so you can sign in with Face ID, a fingerprint or a password manager. You still need a phone number to create the account, and the number remains attached to it.
Can people see my phone number on Telegram?
Only if your settings allow it. By default, Telegram shows your number only to people who already have it saved as a contact. Set 'Who can see my phone number' to Nobody and 'Who can find me by my number' to My Contacts, and use a username so others can reach you without it.
How do I get a +888 number for Telegram?
Fragment, a marketplace tied to the TON blockchain, is the only source. Direct sales ended in 2022, so you buy a number from another user and pay in TON from a connected wallet. Login codes then appear on Fragment instead of arriving by SMS. Keep the wallet backed up, because it controls the login.
What happens when my temporary number expires?
Your Telegram account keeps working on every device where you are logged in. The issue is future logins: Telegram can no longer text that number. If you set a Two-Step Verification password, a passkey and a login email, you can still sign in on new devices without the old number.
Why didn't Telegram send an SMS to my number?
If the number is already logged in somewhere, Telegram sends the code as a chat message in the app instead of by SMS. For a new number, delays usually come from carrier filtering or too many requests. With TempSMSVerify, if no SMS arrives before the number expires, your balance is refunded automatically.
Is a temporary number enough to keep Telegram private?
It keeps your personal number away from Telegram and other users, which is the main goal for most people. It does not hide your identity completely: Telegram still sees your IP address and device details, and anything you share in chats can identify you. Combine it with good privacy settings and careful sharing.
