Verification code not received? Find the fix in six questions
Tell the troubleshooter which app you are verifying, whether the number is your own phone or a temporary one, how long you have waited and how many times you asked for the code. It returns a short checklist in the order that resolves most cases, with links to the detailed guides.
Quick answer
Why have I not received my verification code?
Usually the cause is one of four things: the number was entered in the wrong format, the code was requested so many times that the app paused delivery, the phone has no signal or blocks short-code messages, or the app rejects that type of number. Wait two minutes, request once more, then work through the checklist below.
Troubleshooter
Six questions at most. Your answers stay in the browser.
How the troubleshooter works
- Which app: the checklist links to that app's guide, with its code length, delivery channels and known VoIP policy.
- Own phone or temporary number: a phone that is yours can have signal, roaming or carrier filters in the way; a temporary number cannot, but its timer and country matter.
- How long you waited: most codes arrive within seconds; a few carriers queue messages for several minutes, and some apps throttle after repeated requests.
- How many requests: every new request usually invalidates the previous code, and three or more in a row triggers a cooldown on most platforms.
- Roaming, signal and VoIP: international roaming often blocks short codes, and many apps refuse virtual or VoIP ranges outright.
The most common causes, ranked
| Cause | Typical sign | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong number format | Form accepted the number, nothing arrives, no error | Re-enter without the trunk 0; check the country dropdown; compare with the E.164 formatter |
| Too many requests | Resend button greyed out or 'try again later' | Stop for 30–60 minutes; use only the latest code when it comes |
| Carrier or device filter | Other SMS arrive but not codes | Check blocked senders and spam folder; ask the carrier to enable short codes; restart |
| Roaming abroad | Codes worked at home, not on a trip | Enable international SMS roaming or use a voice-call option; or rent a local temporary number |
| VoIP or virtual number rejected | 'Number not supported' or instant failure | Use a mobile-carrier number; see the app's VoIP policy in the requirements index |
| Temporary number already used | Code arrives but the app says the number is taken | Buy a fresh number; pick a different country if the app limits that region |
If you are using a temporary number
A temporary number from the catalog is reserved for you for up to 20 minutes. During that window you can request the code again on the same number at no extra cost; the message shows up on the order page the moment the network delivers it. If the timer runs out and no SMS arrived, you are not charged and the held amount returns to your balance automatically. The usual reasons for a miss are an app that does not serve that country, a number the app has seen before, or a form that quietly altered the number you typed.
If you are using your own phone
Start with the boring checks: airplane mode off, at least one bar of signal, SMS storage not full, and the sender not in a blocked list or a filtered-messages folder. If other texts arrive but verification codes do not, your carrier may be filtering short codes; prepaid plans and some MVNOs disable them by default. Abroad, international SMS roaming is often off or does not carry short codes at all; switch to the voice-call option if the app has one, or verify from a local temporary number instead.
When nothing works
If a code has not arrived after 20 minutes and two attempts, change one variable at a time: a different number (or country), a different device or browser, or a different verification channel such as a voice call or an email code. Document the time of each attempt; app support teams can look up whether the message was handed to the carrier. Our long-form guide walks through each step with screenshots and app-specific notes.
FAQ
Verification code FAQ
How long should I wait for a verification code?
Most codes arrive within 5 to 30 seconds. Wait a full two minutes before requesting another one; some carriers and some apps batch messages for that long. After five minutes, assume the message will not come and move on to the checklist.
Does requesting the code again cancel the first one?
Usually yes. Almost every app invalidates the previous code when it sends a new one, so if two arrive late, only the newest works. Asking three or more times in a row typically triggers a cooldown of 15 minutes to 24 hours.
Why do I receive normal texts but not verification codes?
Verification codes are usually sent from short codes or alphanumeric sender IDs, which carriers can filter separately from person-to-person SMS. Check blocked senders and any 'filtered' or 'unknown senders' folder, then ask your carrier whether short codes or premium messaging are enabled on your plan.
Can I receive a verification code while roaming?
Sometimes. International SMS roaming has to be active on your plan, and even then some foreign networks do not carry short-code messages. If the app offers a voice call, that path is more reliable abroad. A temporary number from the country you are in avoids the problem entirely.
Why was my Google Voice or VoIP number rejected?
Many apps refuse numbers that belong to VoIP or virtual ranges because they are cheap to mass-create. The error can be explicit ('number not supported') or silent (no code ever arrives). The requirements index shows the VoIP policy for 50+ apps; a mobile-carrier number is the fix.
What happens if the code never arrives on a temporary number?
Nothing is charged. The amount held when you ordered the number is released back to your balance as soon as the number expires without an SMS. You can then try another number or country.
