When does X send a verification code?
X lets you sign up with an email or a phone number. If you add a phone, either at sign-up or later under Settings and privacy > Your account > Account information > Phone, X texts a verification code to it. In some cases X offers a voice call instead.
X also asks for a phone number when it temporarily locks or limits an account for unusual activity. Confirming a number with a code is one of the ways to unlock your own account.

Why am I not receiving my X verification code?
