Phone Number for Skype: What Still Applies in 2026

Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025, so you can no longer create a new Skype account. Phone verification still matters for the Microsoft account behind Skype and Teams. This page explains what is left and where a temporary number still helps.

Quick answer

Can I still get a phone number for Skype verification?

Skype itself is gone: Microsoft retired it on May 5, 2025, and new sign-ups ended. Your Skype login was a Microsoft account, which now opens Microsoft Teams. If Microsoft asks to verify a phone for that account, a TempSMSVerify number can receive the code, and you pay only if it arrives.

How to verify Skype with a temporary number

  1. 1

    Check what you need

Skype is retired. Decide whether you need Teams, a Microsoft account, or your old Skype Credit.

  2. 2

    Sign in to Teams

Use your old Skype login in Microsoft Teams to bring over contacts and chats.

  3. 3

Top up if a code is needed

Add at least $5 with Card via Stripe (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Apple Pay, Google Pay); Crypto (USDC or SOL on Solana) if Microsoft asks for phone verification.

  4. 4

    Buy a Microsoft number

Pick Microsoft and a country, enter the number on Microsoft's screen, and request the SMS once.

  5. 5

    Secure the account

Enter the code, then add an authenticator app and a recovery email before the number expires.

Is Skype still available?

No. Microsoft announced in February 2025 that it would retire Skype, and the service shut down on May 5, 2025. You cannot download Skype or create a new Skype account. Skype for Business is a separate product and was not part of this change.

Existing users were invited to sign in to Microsoft Teams with their Skype credentials, which carried over contacts and chats. People who still had Skype Credit or a calling subscription can keep using it through the Skype Dial Pad on the web portal or inside Teams, until the subscription ends. Microsoft no longer sells new Skype Credit or subscriptions.

Where a phone number still comes in

Every Skype account was a Microsoft account. Microsoft still asks for phone verification on those accounts, for example when you create a new Microsoft account for Teams, when a sign-in looks unusual, or when you add a security method.

That is the code a temporary number can receive today. If you search for a Skype number to sign up for Skype, the honest answer is that the product no longer exists. If you need to set up Teams or recover a Microsoft account, see our page on Microsoft and Outlook verification at /temp-number/microsoft.

  • Sign in to Teams with your old Skype login to find your contacts and chats.
  • Use leftover Skype Credit from the Skype web portal's Dial Pad or from Teams.
  • Old Skype Numbers (the paid inbound numbers) stopped renewing before the shutdown.

Skype verification today: problems and fixes

Most Skype-related errors in 2026 come from trying to use a service that has been switched off.

Common Skype-related problems in 2026
Message or problemWhat it usually meansWhat to do
Skype app will not sign inSkype was retired on May 5, 2025Sign in to Microsoft Teams with the same account
No way to create a Skype accountNew Skype sign-ups ended with the shutdownCreate a Microsoft account and use Teams instead
Microsoft code not receivedMicrosoft has not sent the SMS, or delivery failedWait a few minutes. Cancel after about 2 minutes for a refund
Cannot buy Skype CreditMicrosoft stopped selling Skype Credit and subscriptionsUse any remaining credit via the Dial Pad, or another calling app
Message asks for your Skype codeMicrosoft does not ask for codes by chat or phoneTreat it as a scam and do not share the code

Pay only if the Microsoft code arrives

If you buy a number for a Microsoft account check, TempSMSVerify freezes the price in your balance and charges it only when an SMS arrives. If Microsoft never sends the code, the full amount returns to your balance automatically.

The number is reserved for up to 20 minutes. A Microsoft account protects email, files and Teams, so do not leave a temporary number as its only security method. Add an authenticator app and a recovery email you control.

Use numbers responsibly

Use TempSMSVerify only for your own Microsoft account, and follow the Microsoft Services Agreement. Bulk account creation, spam and impersonation break Microsoft's rules and ours. Read our Acceptable Use Policy at /acceptable-use before you buy.

FAQ

Skype verification FAQ

Is Skype shut down?

Yes. Microsoft retired Skype on May 5, 2025, after announcing the change in February 2025. The app no longer works for calls or chats, and new accounts cannot be created. Microsoft points former users to Microsoft Teams, where the same login brings over contacts and chat history.

Can I still create a Skype account?

No. New Skype sign-ups ended with the shutdown. What you can create is a Microsoft account, which signs you in to Teams, Outlook and other Microsoft services. If Microsoft asks for a phone number during that sign-up, a TempSMSVerify number can receive the SMS code, and you pay only if it arrives.

What happened to my Skype Credit?

Microsoft says existing Skype Credit and calling subscriptions can still be used through the Skype Dial Pad, on the Skype web portal or inside Teams, until the subscription ends or the credit runs out. New Skype Credit and subscriptions are no longer sold, and automatic top-ups were switched off.

Can I log in to Teams with my old Skype account?

Yes. Microsoft built the move around that: sign in to Microsoft Teams with your Skype credentials and your contacts and chats appear there. If Microsoft asks you to verify a phone number during sign-in, use one you can access, or a TempSMSVerify number for a one-time check.

Why would I still need a phone number for Skype?

You would not need one for Skype itself anymore. The phone codes people still see come from Microsoft account security, for sign-ups, unusual sign-ins or adding a security method. That is where a temporary number helps. Our Microsoft verification page at /temp-number/microsoft covers that flow in detail.

Is a message asking for my Skype code a scam?

Almost certainly. Microsoft does not ask you to send a verification code by chat, email or phone call, and Skype no longer exists to send one. Anyone asking for a code is trying to take over your Microsoft account. Do not share it, and change your password if you already did.
