When does Twitch ask for a phone number?

You can sign up for Twitch with an email. Since 2021, channels can require chatters to verify an email or a phone number before they can chat. You verify once, by entering a code Twitch texts you, and it counts in every channel.

Twitch also starts its two-factor authentication (2FA) setup by verifying a phone number by SMS. After that, you can add an authenticator app for sign-in codes.

Twitch's shared-number rules

Twitch lets up to five accounts be verified with one phone number, but only after you turn on Additional Account Creation in Security and Privacy settings. It is off by default.

There is a catch. Twitch says that if one account is banned from a channel, every account verified with the same phone or email is banned from that channel too. A site-wide suspension also extends to every account on that number. A number that has had other users before you could carry that history, which is another reason to treat a temporary number as a one-step tool.

2FA on Twitch: why a temporary number is the wrong anchor

Streamers' accounts hold followers, subscriptions, payouts and stream keys. Twitch's 2FA is tied to the phone you verify during setup, and recovery and some security changes go back to that phone. A TempSMSVerify number expires after up to 20 minutes and cannot receive those later codes.

  • Use a number you own for 2FA on any channel that earns money or has an audience.
  • Add an authenticator app during 2FA setup and keep your email secured.
  • Never share 2FA codes or your stream key with anyone who messages you.

Phone number for Twitch: errors and fixes

Twitch errors usually come from the shared-number rules or from repeated requests.

Pay only if the Twitch code arrives

FAQ

Twitch verification FAQ

Does Twitch require a phone number to sign up?

No. You can create a Twitch account with an email. Twitch asks for a phone number when a channel only lets verified chatters talk, when you set up two-factor authentication, and in some account changes. A TempSMSVerify number can receive a one-time code for those steps.

How many Twitch accounts can use one phone number?

Twitch allows up to five accounts to be verified with the same phone number, but only after you turn on Additional Account Creation in Security and Privacy settings, which is off by default. Accounts that share a number also share channel bans and site-wide suspensions.

Why does Twitch say my number is already in use?

Another account is already verified with that number, and the limit or the Additional Account Creation setting blocks a new one. With TempSMSVerify, if Twitch rejects the number before sending a code, no SMS arrives and you are not charged. Cancel after about 2 minutes and buy a fresh number.

Should I use a temporary number for Twitch 2FA?

Not for an account you plan to keep. Twitch's 2FA setup starts with verifying a phone by SMS, and later security steps can go back to that phone. A TempSMSVerify number expires after up to 20 minutes. Use a number you own for 2FA, and add an authenticator app during setup.

Why can't I chat after verifying my phone on Twitch?

The channel may require a verified email as well as a phone, or use extra chat rules such as follower-only mode or a minimum account age. Verify your email in Settings, then check the channel's chat rules. Phone verification itself only needs to be done once to count across all channels.

Why is my Twitch code not arriving?

Delivery depends on Twitch and on the carrier behind the number. Request the code once and wait a few minutes, because repeated requests can trigger a pause. If nothing arrives, cancel after about 2 minutes, and TempSMSVerify returns your frozen balance automatically and in full.
