Phone Number for Blizzard (Battle.net) Verification
Blizzard uses a phone on Battle.net for SMS Protect, which some games such as Overwatch 2 require on new accounts. TempSMSVerify gives you a phone number for Blizzard that receives the code online, charged only if the SMS arrives.
Quick answer
Can I use a temporary phone number for Blizzard?
Sometimes, for a one-time Battle.net code. TempSMSVerify shows the SMS in your browser and charges you only if it arrives. Blizzard says prepaid and VoIP numbers cannot be used for SMS Protect, so many numbers are declined, and declined numbers cost nothing. What is Blizzard SMS Protect?
SMS Protect links a text-enabled mobile number to your Battle.net account. Blizzard uses it to verify you during account changes and recovery, and it can send phone notifications about account activity. You add it from Account Settings > Security on battle.net.
Overwatch 2 made SMS Protect famous in 2022 as part of Blizzard's Defense Matrix. After complaints, Blizzard dropped the requirement for most existing players with a connected Battle.net account, but new accounts must still meet the SMS Protect requirements to play.
Blizzard's number rules: prepaid, VoIP and one per account
Blizzard states that certain types of phone numbers, including prepaid and VoIP, cannot be used for SMS Protect. In 2022, players on some US prepaid carriers reported being blocked. Blizzard also allows a phone number on only one Battle.net account at a time, which is why 'This phone number is already in use' is a common error.
TempSMSVerify sources numbers from licensed providers, but only Blizzard decides which numbers it accepts, and many temporary lines fall into categories it declines. If Blizzard rejects a number, no SMS is sent, so you are not charged. Cancel after about 2 minutes and try another country, or use a number you own.
Account security: SMS Protect is a recovery tool
A Battle.net account can hold Diablo, World of Warcraft and Overwatch purchases going back years. SMS Protect exists so you can prove ownership later. A temporary number that expires after up to 20 minutes cannot do that job, and anyone who gets that number later could not help you either.
- Use a number you own for SMS Protect on any account with purchases or progress.
- Add the Battle.net Authenticator in the Battle.net Mobile App for sign-in approval.
- Never share Battle.net codes with people offering boosts, gold or account help.
Phone number for Blizzard: errors and fixes
Battle.net errors almost always come from the number type or the one-account rule.
| Message or problem | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Number not eligible | Blizzard classifies the number as prepaid or VoIP | Cancel after about 2 minutes (no charge) and try another country, or use a number you own |
| This phone number is already in use | The number is on another Battle.net account | Cancel and try a fresh number |
| Code not received | Blizzard has not sent the SMS yet, or delivery failed | Wait a few minutes before resending. No SMS means a refund |
| Invalid code | An older code or a typo | Use only the newest code in your dashboard |
| Game still asks for SMS Protect | The game needs SMS Protect active on the account | Finish adding the phone on battle.net, then restart the game |
Pay only if the Battle.net code arrives
When you buy a Blizzard number, TempSMSVerify freezes the price in your balance and charges it only when an SMS reaches the number. Because Blizzard declines many number types, this matters: a rejected number never receives a code, and the full amount returns to your balance automatically.
Responsible use on Battle.net
Use TempSMSVerify only for your own Battle.net account and follow the Blizzard End User License Agreement and in-game codes of conduct. SMS Protect exists to stop banned players from returning on fresh accounts. Smurfing, cheating, ban evasion, boosting services and account reselling break Blizzard's rules and our Acceptable Use Policy at /acceptable-use.
FAQ
Blizzard (Battle.net) verification FAQ
Does Blizzard require a phone number?
Not for every account. Battle.net accounts are created with an email. Some games ask for SMS Protect, including Overwatch 2 for new accounts, and Blizzard uses the phone for security and recovery. A TempSMSVerify number can receive a one-time code if Blizzard accepts it, but many temporary numbers are declined.
Why won't Battle.net accept my phone number?
Blizzard says prepaid and VoIP numbers cannot be used for SMS Protect, and it allows a number on only one account. A wrong country selection can also cause a rejection. With TempSMSVerify, a declined number never receives an SMS, so you are not charged. Cancel after about 2 minutes and try another country.
Do I still need SMS Protect for Overwatch 2?
It depends on the account. In October 2022, Blizzard removed the requirement for most existing Overwatch players with a connected Battle.net account. New accounts, and accounts that were never connected, still have to meet SMS Protect requirements. Check the in-game prompt to see whether your account is affected.
Can two Battle.net accounts share one phone number?
No. Blizzard allows a phone number on one Battle.net account at a time, which is why 'This phone number is already in use' appears. That also applies to recycled numbers that were used by someone else before. Each account needs its own number for SMS Protect.
Should I keep a temporary number as my SMS Protect phone?
No. SMS Protect is how Blizzard confirms you own the account during changes and recovery. A TempSMSVerify number expires after up to 20 minutes and cannot receive those later codes. If you keep the account, replace it with a number you own and add the Battle.net Authenticator.
Why is my Battle.net code not arriving?
If Blizzard accepted the number, delivery depends on Blizzard and the carrier. Wait a few minutes before resending, because repeated requests can pause new codes. If nothing arrives, cancel after about 2 minutes, and TempSMSVerify returns your frozen balance automatically and in full.
