How KakaoTalk verification works
KakaoTalk confirms your phone number when you install the app. You pick a country, enter the number without the country code, and KakaoTalk texts you a short numeric code. If it does not arrive within a couple of minutes, the app offers to resend it or call you.

When a non-Korean number is enough, and when it is not
For messaging, a non-Korean number generally works: you can chat, join open chats and add friends by ID. The limits start where Korea's identity rules apply.
